The paleo diet is based upon eating foods our ancestors would have eaten during the Paleolithic era. This includes beef, pork, lamb, poultry, game meat, fish, seafood, fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and healthful oils (olive, coconut, avocado, macadamia, walnut and flaxseed). You will eat a higher amount of protein and lower your carbohydrate intake. Foods that are lower on the glycemic index will be slowly digested and absorbed and won't spike your blood sugar. It will also give us a diet that is higher in fiber. Dietary fiber is very good for us. Non-starchy vegetables contain eight times more fiber than whole grains. Not all fat is bad for you; it is the type of fat. You should increase the amount of healthful monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats. You also want to increase your potassium intake and lower your sodium intake.

Here are the things you want to cut out of a paleo diet: cereal grains, legumes, dairy, refined sugar, potatoes, processed foods, salt and refined vegetable oils. This is not hard to follow. Breakfast can be something as easy as an omelet with fresh veggies and diced meat. Lunch can be a yummy salad filled with veggies, nuts, apples, pears, meat or seafood. Top it off with some olive oil and lemon juice. If you are wanting some pasta for dinner, spaghetti squash makes a great substitution. Berries make for a great snack.
